Here's a story that is worth following if you own an HP inkjet printer.

HP Accused Of Expiring Ink Cartridges What is it with printer manufacturers and their increasingly sophisticated means of screwing over the customers who buy ink from them? Even going beyond various attempts at using technology to block out competition, printer makers have long been accused of having their printers claim a cartridge is empty when it's still 25% full. However, some consumers are claiming that HP goes a step further, and includes a "must use by" date encoded in the chip in their ink cartridges, meaning that if you don't use the ink by a certain date, no HP printer will let you use it any more. It's not clear if the complaint focuses on the fact that this exists at all, or (more reasonably) that the expiration date isn't given to consumers. HP's defense, of course, will most likely be to point out that older cartridges may clog up, causing damage to the printers. Which may, in fact, be true. However, without telling the buyer that the cartridge expires, they may have opened themselves up to trouble, as many people will assume the cartridges will remain good.

Founded in 1841, The Brooklyn Daily Eagle was published for 114 years without missing a single edition. Now, thanks to both the efforts of the Brooklyn Public Library and the Library of Congress, we can step back in time and read one of our nations most famous and successful daily newspapers.

The archives of the Brooklyn Daily Eagle Project allow you to travel back in time to 19th Century New York City. Visitors can search by month, year or by exact date for specific events, or just scroll the timeline for what interests you. The project is currently half completed, so you'll have to wait a bit for anything published in the Eagle after 1902.

People are forever asking me how Web writing differs from print writing, and frankly I get rather sick of running over the same basic tips repeatedly. From now on, for such general inquiries I'm going to recommend this article. This is an ideal piece to share with coworkers. I would even suggest getting permission to reproduce it in Web style guides.

Now you can get Gmail. It appears as though Gmail has expanded their offer to test Gmail to active blogger.com users. I noticed this as an option the other day, and sure enough, I was able to create an account. My email address is jerry.mills@gmail.com. I'm quite impressed with this web based account. The system of using "Labels" is pretty cool. Since Blogger.com is free, simply create a blog for yourself then look for the gmail option on the sidebar of your dashboard.

Robonaut

NASA is collaborating with DARPA (Defense Advanced Research Projects
Agency) to create Robonaut (half-robot, half-astronaut), a machine designed
to help humans work and explore in space. Robonaut will aid and protect
astronauts, both by performing tasks of dexterity, strength and endurance,
and by 'going where the risks are too high for humans'.

The official website is an engineering students dream come true. Visitors
to the site can learn about how Robonaut's myriad software programs,
subsystems and mechanisms work together, including its 'telepresence
control system'. You can read about the current progress of the robot's
development, as well as watch videos of this amazing technology perform
tasks such as climbing, tethering, and using tools. One small step for

Google Groups 2

Google finally bit the bullet and added mailing list support to Google Groups: Google Groups 2 - BETA. It even lets you create your own mailing list, just like Yahoo! Groups.

Google says:

Group creation: Users can easily create, join, and search email-based mailing lists; administrative interface enables customized access controls to designate a group as public or restricted

Dynamic conversations: Postings appear within 10 seconds and are indexed within 10 minutes

Enhanced user interface: Users can track and mark favorite topics using the "My Groups" feature and view postings in a variety of ways including by message summary, title, or conversation view

TIPS: Alternate Uses For The Windows Key

Are you a user who finds reaching for the mouse an annoying action? If so, then consider keeping your fingers on the keyboard to accomplish the same objectives by using the keyboard shortcuts listed below.

Windows Key + E
Opens the Explorer window.

Windows Key + D
Minimizes all open windows and displays the Desktop. If you repeat the keyboard combination, the open windows will return to their original state.

Windows Key + F
Displays the Search Result window.

Windows Key + L
Locks your Windows XP computer.

Windows Key + R
Displays the Run command.

Windows Key + F1
Displays the Help and Support Centre window.

Windows Key + Pause/Break
Displays the Systems Properties dialog box.

Windows Key + Tab
Cycles through the buttons on the Task Bar. To activate the selected button on the Task Bar, press the Enter key.

Alt + Tab
Toggles or switches between open windows.

Alt + F4
Closes the open window.

So the next time you need to activate an open application or need to close a window, stop yourself from lifting your hands from the keyboard and simply use the appropriate keyboard conversation.
